Alsace had a very diverse economy, and therefore, complex social divisions. Geographically,
Alsace consisted of three agricultural zones; the rich plain along the Rhine where the peasants grew cereal crops, the hilly
transition zone that depended on viticulture, and the impoverished subsistence agriculture of the Vosges mountains. Alsace
was also one of the most industrialized regions of France in the early nineteenth century.
